In the UAE, it was recorded in 2009 from Khor Kalba's protected area, before the area was designated. Globally, the native range of this species spans from Sahara to Tanzania, the Arabian Peninsula and India (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

This annual grass species is known to grow in stony and rocky ground, including gravel plains (Norton et al. 2009, Gairola et al. 2017). It is also described as growing in plantation habitats (MEW 2010).
