Jongbloed et al. (2003) recorded this species from the hills between Masafi and Dibba in the northeast of the UAE, in addition to Wadi Diftah and the Ru'us al-Jibal. However, the identity of records require confirmation, and pending further study, we consider there to be one species in the UAE, P. decaisnei. Globally, this species is native to Europe, Africa, temperate Asia and the western Himalayas (Board of Trustees, RBG Kew 2019).

This annual, red poppy species can reach up to 0.3 m in height and has slender stems (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Its leaves are deeply dissected, it has black seeds and scarlet flowers which can be seen between February and April (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Typically, it is found growing within wadis and on mountains at low elevations (Jongbloed et al. 2003). Papaver species appear to prefer moist soils in shaded places, especially in agricultural or cultivated contexts (Feulner 2011). This species is a crop wild relative of the poppy, Papaver somniferum (Kameswara Rao 2013).

There is uncertainty surrounding the taxonomy of this genus and, therefore, the Papaver species distributions within the Ru'us al-Jibal and the UAE in general. As a result, it is assessed as Data Deficient.
