Assessment rationale/justification
Despite virtual extermination by 1860, protection of elephant seals and their breeding sites in the United States and Mexico has allowed them to make a remarkable recovery. They are now common enough to not be considered at risk.; Bien qu'ils aient été pratiquement exterminés avant 1860, la protection dont bénéficient les éléphants de mer et leurs sites de reproduction aux États-Unis et au Mexique leur a permis d'effectuer un rétablissement remarquable. Ils sont maintenant assez communs pour qu'on considère qu'ils ne sont pas en péril.
